‘Bye Bye Baby’


ACT 1

Marilyn Monroe

The show opens with Marilyn Monroe lying naked on a bed! She takes some phone calls before she slumps unconscious in an intoxicated drugged state (SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW).The bed spirals into the air in similar tornado fashion as the house with Wendy in it in ‘Wizard of Oz’ Effectively taking her back to a teenage Norma Jean she lands with a bump onto a sofa watching the film on television (WIZARD OF OZ). We see her rebelling with her guardian Aunt Ana and witness her first relationships (STARDUST) and heartaches (YOU’D BE SURPRISED) and (RUNNIN’ WILD). She takes up modelling (HEATWAVE) and (STYLE), see her interviewed by film giants Fox who change her name to Marilyn Monroe. She meets the love of her life, the legendary baseball player Joe DiMaggio (KISS) and (I WANNA BE LOVED BY YOU) and (SHE ACTS LIKE A WOMAN SHOULD); the act ends with (THERE’S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUISNESS).

ACT 2

Marilyn goes to Korea to entertain the troops (DIAMONDS ARE A GIRLS BEST FRIEND) but on returning to Joe things start to go wrong in her relationship (WHEN LOVE GOES WRONG) and (EVERY BABY NEEDS A DA-DA-DADDY). She meets playwright Arthur Miller whom she marries (MY HEART BELONGS TO DADDY) but when he gets involved in the Edgar J Hoover/ communist/actor witch hunt it breaks up the marriage (A FINE ROMANCE) and (I’M THROUGH WITH LOVE). Her film career goes on the rocks as she resorts to drink and drugs as she picks up again with Joe DiMaggio (LET’S MAKE LOVE). The story goes full cycle as we return to Marilyn lying on the bed at the start of act one (SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW reprise) and (WIZARD OF OZ reprise). Marilyn dies as Joe DiMaggio sings (ALWAYS ON MY MIND). Full ensemble sings (BYE, BYE BABY) to conclude the show.
